WHAT HAST THOU DONE

Greetings,

I have preached and taught much of this question, found in the Bible, over the years.  It is a piercing question that must be asked and answered.   It is found in Scripture, God asking it of His creation.   It is found among men, that they ask one another of this question.

It is a basic spiritual examination of our lives, minds and hearts and of our souls spiritual condition before the Lord in light of His Word.     so even though I have done many writings, teachings on this I have never documented all the Scripture references.   I had started a book sometime ago to work on this, but lost the entire thing.   In that rough draft I had documented all the Scripture references found in the Bible.   With that being lost, and beginning again in Bible readings, I will mark and document those in my prayer notebook and well, as on here.

I have not decided of whether to attempt the writings of devotional and sermon or not.   But from time to time as the Lord allows I may write these out.   Now to note on this question, it takes on many forms and tenses.   I will seek to mark all of them.  and if there be a question to why I marked a certain passage or verse, I will write to that.   I will also from time to time, document the reference to which is being asked, and who is asking the question, 'What Hast Thou Done'.

GENESIS
Chapter 3
3:13, "And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done?  And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat."

4:7, "If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?>  and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. "
God is asking the question, and God requires an answer.   What hast thou done?  Have you done well? or have you not done well?   Herein, this verse causes us to hear and know the truth of our choices and life.    IF we do well, then God shall answer 'what hast thou done?'   God will answer 'well done, thou good and faithful servant;  enter now into the joys of the Lord.'    But if we anwer 'what hast thou done? with - "I have not done well"  Then we know by the truth declared here from the Lord, sin lies at the door.   And the wages of sin is death.   And God will declare to us at the end, 'depart from Me, ye worker of iniquity; I never knew you."

4:10, "And He said, What hast thou done?  the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto Me from the ground."
Another example of God asking a question, that He already knows the answer too.   God knew Cain killed Abel.  His blood was crying out to Him, for the life of God is found in the blood of man.   God knew what he had done.  But as we see throughout the Bible, and hear the Holy Spirit ask of us, 'what hast thou done?'  He is demanding of us an answer, "I have sinned against You O Lord."   May it not be so!  But alas!, too often each has know his own folly and been called into question after the sin, 'What hast thou done?'   And we are left with the sorrow, anguish and plight of being found out that we have failed our Lord.

12:18, "And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me?  why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?"
Abraham and Sarah had lied about their relationship.  Pharaoh had taken her to be his wife.   God smote the Egyptians with plagues for touching His anointed ones.   And a legitimate question is asked, 'What have you done to me?'   If the wicked sin, their judgement is understood, but what happens when the righteous sins?   Will this generation not rise up at judgement day and ask the church, 'What have you done to us?'   You had the power of God, redemption, prayer, grace, Divine favor and you didn't share it, pray, or seek it like you should have.   What have you done to us!   We've allowed Satan, sin and self to dominate and multiply.

20:9, "Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us?  and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin?  thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done."
Abraham and Sarah had lied and deceived the king.   God had come and warned Abimelech that he was a dead man for taking Abraham's wife.   God had withheld hm from defiling Sarah.   Abimelech was left to ask Abraham, out of such mischief, 'What hast thou done? unto me and my kingdom?"   And the profound statement with this question, 'Such things ought not to be done.'

26:10, "And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us?  one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us."
As his father and mother had done, so Isaac did.   And the king is in trouble and asks the same question, 'What have you done unto us?'    There deception and sin could have caused greater trouble had the Lord not Divinely delivered and protected.

27:37, And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him; and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?"
Esau had sold and been deprived by trickery from Jacob twice to lose it all.  And his father, Isaac, ask of him, 'what shall I do now for you?"   What has thou done?  is our question;  now here is one variation to that - 'what shall I do for yo now?'   This is no longer answering for oneself, but now it is for others.   There is the two fold examination also of God and man.   What shall God do for us now?  What shall i do for my sons, family, friends etc. now?

29:25, "And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah:  and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me?  did not I serve with thee for Rachel?  wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?"

31:26, "And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?"
Consequences of choices and decision.    It is a legitimate question from Laban to Jacob - 'what have you done".   it is a form of 'why have you done this".

42:28, "And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack:  and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?"

44:15, "And Joseph said unto them, What deed is that that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?"

EXODUS
Chapter 1
1:18, "And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?"

14:5, "And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled:  and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?"
The usual question is 'what have we done?'   But here it is 'why have we done this?'   and that is sometimes just as important to be answered as 'what'.   The question of 'why' is to answer the intent of 'what has been done'.    The Egyptians knew what they had done.   They had let the children of Israel go free.  Now they are asking themselves why they have done this.

DEUTERONOMY
Chapter 29
29:24, "Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the Lord done thus unto this land?  what meaneth the heat of this great anger?"

JOSHUA
Chapter 7
7:9, "For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth:  and what wilt Thou do unto Thy great Name?"

JUDGES
Chapter 2
2:2, "And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars:  but ye have not obeyed My voice:  why have ye done this?"
this is one of the verses, putting forth this question that started all this study of 'what have you done'.   The children of Israel had seen and been a part of great and mighty miracles and mercies of God.   And God gave forth His commands and they were to 'keep and do' them.   Yet, they rebelled, forsook and disobeyed.    chapter 1 is filled with verse after verse of their disobedience.  And here in the beginning of chapter 2 God comes and calls them into question with, 'Why have ye done this?"
It is a question that God comes and asks of us as well.

6:29, "And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing?  And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing."

8:2, 3, "And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you?  Is nto the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?  God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb:  and what was I able to do in comparison of you?  Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that."

11:12, "And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come, against me to fight in my land?"

15:6, "Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this?  And they answered, Samson, the son in law of the timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion.  and the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire."

15:11, "Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us?  what is this that thou hast done unto us?  And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them."

20:12, "and the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?"

I SAMUEL
2:23, "And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people."

4:16, "And he said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army.  And he said, What is there done, my son?"

5:8, "They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?  And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath.  And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither."

6:2, "And the Phiistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the Lord?   tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place."

10:2, "When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found:  and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?"

13:11, "And Samuel said, What hast thou done?  And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;"

17:26, "And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel?  for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?"

17:29, "And David said, What have I now done?  Is there not a cause?"

20:1, "and David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done?  what is mine iniquity and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?"

20:32, "And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, wherefore shall he be slain?  what hath he done?"

26:18, "And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant?  for what have I done?  or what evil is in mine hand?"

29:3, "Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here?  and Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?"

29:8, "And David said unto Achish, But what have I done?  and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"

II SAMUEL
3:24, "Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold Abner came unto thee:  why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?"

12:21, "then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done?  thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread."
This is the one of the very moving phrase study of this great question, 'What Hast Thou Done".   For this is following the great sin of David with Bathsheba in adultery and the murder of Uriah the Hittite.   And from those sins, God judged and punished David.   One of those judgements was that the child conceived in this place of adultery had to die.   David wept, fasted, prayed before the Lord for the child for a week.  And after the week, God smote the child and he died.   Upon news of the childs death, David arose, washed, and ate.   And his servants not understanding this asked him this great question, 'what have you done'.
For most they will not or do not weep and fast before the death.  But after the death they make great anguish of spirit and lament greatly.   David did it in reverse fashion.   and his answer is just as needful for us to hear and understand, "when the child was alive; I fated and wept for the hope of the child being spared.   But when the child died, I arose and wahsed and ate; for I said, I cannot bring the child back, I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me."

16:10, "What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah?   so let him curse, because the Lord hath said unto him, Curse David, Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?"

19:22, "And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me?   shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel?  for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?"

21:3, "Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you?  and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the Lord?"

24:17, "And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly but these sheep, what have they done?  let Thine hand, I pray Thee, be against me, and against my father's house."

I KINGS

1:27, "Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?"

9:8, "And at this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the Lord done thus unto this land, and to this house?"

17:8, "And she said unto Elijah, what have I to do with thee, O thou man of God?  art thou come unto me to call my sins to rememberance, and to slay my son?"

19:9, "And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?"

19:13, "And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?"

19:20, "And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee.   And he said unto him, Go back again:  for what have I done to thee?"

II KINGS

3:13, "And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have to do with thee?  get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother.  And the king of Israel siad unto him, Nay:  for the Lord hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab."

9:19, "Then he sent out a second on horseback, which came to them, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace?  And Jehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace?  turn thee behind me."

I CHRONICLES
21:17, "And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered?  even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done?  let thine hand, I pray Thee, O Lord my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on Thy people, that they should be plagued."

35:21, "But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah?  I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war:  for god commanded me to make haste:  forbear thee from meddling with God, Who is with me, that He destroy thee not."
